Kamdar and Associates was established in 1982 and is considered amongst the pioneers of Ship Recycling Industry in Alang. The second vessel that Alang received from Metal Scrap Trade Corporation was a Greek general cargo ship named MV Didier. It was beached in Kamdar & Associates on 14th February 1983, 24 hours later than the first ship that was beached in Alang; thereby marking the start of world’s largest ship recycling yard. Under the guidance of Mr. Shivlal J. Padia, 13 workers from Darukhana Mumbai started the demolition work for MV Didier. Since then, 3 of those first 13 workers are still working with Dathawala Group of Companies.
Today Alang has 180+ plots which recycles more than 4 million tonnes of ships and employs more than tens of thousands of people directly and indirectly. Several businesses originated and depend on ship recycling business; thereby increasing the chances of diversified employment.
Since 1983, Kamdar & Associates have recycled about 68 ships of different types that has yielded more than 569 tonnes of steel, machineries, non-ferrous materials and usables.
Kamdar & Associates follows guidelines of Ship Recycling Code – 2013 by government of India and is certified under ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, OHSAS 18001:2007 and ISO 30000:2009. Presently it is under development to obtain Hong Kong Convention Statement of Compliance (HKC SOC) and EU SRR from RINA.
Kamdar & Associates operates in a total area of 3488 m2 and about 650 m2 area is under development for reinforced cement concrete (RCC) impermeable floor in two sections on which cleaning, cutting and handling of oily blocks, machineries and materials will be done. Proper and sturdy drainage systems are applied on each impermeable floor sections with their respective intermediate, bilge and storm water tanks that will avoid contamination of soil and water.
